Las Vegas Silver State Invitational
Championship Game
FCA v. Neusport FC 92 Gold
2-0 Final
Sunday, February 22, 2009

Captains were Oscar Reyes and Derik Embree. 90 minute game.

The opponent came out very aggressive and had the better of play for the first few minutes and while not really getting any quality strikes off, the play was on FCA’s half. Approximately five minutes in, FCA began to regain its footing and the first quality strike of the game was sent by FCA. Momentum slowly began to go FCA’s way and by the 15th minute, FCA was controlling possession.

The tried and true sports adage, a good defense is the best offense – particularly when the defense puts points on the board – was never truer than in the 20th minute. Josh Borland, center defensive man, poached the ball from Neusport’s offense in FCA’s half and proceeded to move up the pitch like an Olympic slalom racer going for gold. Reaching the penalty area Josh is sending FCA’s game ball to its favorite destination – the back of the opponents net. FCA 1- Neusport 0.

In the last ten minutes of the first half, Miguel Romo and Jose Valencia combined for a beauty of a score with Miguel finishing the job from an assist by Jose. At half, FCA 2 – Neusport 0, one plus insurance.

Words cannot do justice to the tough, gritty play of the men of FCA in the second half as they played like the Champions they are, keeping the opponent scoreless and creating the better quality 2nd half scoring chances.

Championship final score FCA 2 – Neusport 0.

MVPs – To Be Determined Later by the young men.

Las Vegas Silver State Invitational - Game 3
FCA v. Ballistic U17

A game FCA had the better of from the start.

The first score happened approximately 20 minutes in by Jose Luis off an assist by Nico - FCA 1-0

The opponent got 1 in shortly after followed by another quick goal by FCA’s Alejandro Garcia off an assist from Nico Sanchez to bring the score to 2-1 at the half.

The second half produced an FCA scoring barrage that started shortly after the half began. Miguel Romo started the onslaught off an assist from Jose Luis - FCA 3-1. Miguel Romo and Jose Luis teamed up again for another score, FCA 4-1. Alejandro scored the fifth goal from an assist by Miguel Romo, FCA 5-1. Ruben rounded out the scoring with the sixth goal from an assist by Jason Ward.

Las Vegas Silver State Invitational - Game 2
FCA v. Spring Valley FC 92
4-0 Final
Saturday, February 21, 2009

Captains were Josh and Nico.

Both teams had won their first game so this was for first place at the end of the first day. Simply put, FCA scored early and often.

The first goal was within ten minutes on a strike by David Sanchez from an assist by Jose Luis. FCA was up 1-0. The second goal was from a free kick of such beautiful creativity it bears describing. From approximately 25 yards out, the slickest three-man one-touch free kick was confidently put in the back of the net by Alejandro Garcia. It began with 3 FCA men creating shape. A firm pass by David Sanchez to his brother Nico who smartly one-touched the perfect sphere across to Alejandro who then nailed the net and left the opponent wondering what had just happened in the previous second of time. FCA 2-0.

The third goal was scored by David Sanchez off and assist Jose Luis while the fourth goal was scored by Jose Luis off an assist from Nico Sanchez. The score at the half was FCA 4 Spring Valley FC 0.

The second half while not changing the scoreboard would certainly not be considered dull as the FCA shot frequency was better than 1 shot every 2 minutes. The opponent shuffled their line-up and moved their best player from forward to center defense and basically played as a second goalie that could not use his hands. FCA strikes hit him at least 6 times in front of the goal. The next most effective defender was the opponent’s goal posts and cross bar as the pipes were ringing every few minutes.

MVPs – Noah Bush and David Sanchez

Las Vegas Silver State Invitational - Game 1
FCA v. Neusport FC 92 Gold
2-0 Final
Saturday, February 21, 2009

Captains were Jose Luis, Michael and Chuy.

The FCA men started with good intensity having the best of the play in the first half. Jose Luis drew a foul in the penalty area and Michael hammered home the penalty kick for FCA’s first goal of the game and tournament. Only a few minutes later, a pass from Michael to Jose Luis resulted in FCA’s second goal for a score of 2-0 at the half.

The second half was much more even play in terms of possession, however the opponent was unable to develop any quality chances on FCA goal. FCA won 2-0.

Saturday, November 29, 2008

Our young men controlled the game and had many opportunities to score. The lone goal was scored by Mike Meyer off an assist from Jose Luis Gomez. Brazil 93 are the sixth-ranked team in Nevada in their age group. This team is a quality squad and would beat most of the teams we face in Idaho.

Las Vegas Turkey Shoot - Game 3
FCA v. Las Vegas Premier
0-1 Final
Saturday, November 29, 2008

A terrific game that remained scoreless until the last 2 minutes when Premier scored on a free kick. Premier did have the majority of the possession. The young men of FCA really hustled and applied pressure consistently and constantly. Again, we did have opportunities to score but could not convert.

Las Vegas Premier won the tournament this year as well as last and are the number-2 ranked team in Nevada. The narrowest margin of victory for Premier was against us at 1 goal. The championship game was won by Premier 2-0 verse the number-4 Nevada ranked team that had earlier knocked out the number-1 ranked Nevada in the tournament. Last year this Premier team beat us 5-0.

MVPs – Noah Bush and Jesus "Chuy" Pelayo.

Las Vegas Turkey Shoot - Game 2
FCA v. Chula Vista Pumas (Cal South)
0-4 Final
Friday, November 28, 2008

This game was college-level physical. The good news was our young men gave as good as they got. The score was 0-1 at half. Again, we had our opportunities to score but alas could not convert. Possession was closer to 50-50. The Pumas are a good team and finished 3rd in the bracket.

MVPs – David Battisti and Arnold Pelayo.

Las Vegas Turkey Shoot - Game 1
FCA v. Firebirds Black (UT)
0-2 Final
Friday, November 28, 2008

The Firebirds scored quickly as we were not mentally prepared for this level of competition. While we probably had the better of the possession and had our opportunities to score, but we came up empty handed. The Firebirds are a good team and finished 2nd in the bracket.

MVPs – Bryan Lynch and Arnold Pelayo.

Championship Game
FCA v. Hobble Creek Storm – 5-0 Final
Saturday, July 26, 2008

With temperatures over century mark and only playing with 11 young men, the young men knew they had their work cut out for them as they made the field. The scoring started midway through the first half with a strike by Saul Salmeron off an assist Mike Meyer. Shortly thereafter, the second goal was scored by Alejandro Garcia from an assist by Noah Bush. First half ended with FCA up 2-0.

Remembering the Hobble Creek comeback to tie in the first match, the young men of FCA continued to press on in the second half. A strike by Alejandro Garcia off an assist by Ed Anderson kept the momentum in FCA’s favor. Only a few minutes later the fourth goal of the match was scored by Noah Bush off an assist by Miguel Romo. The fifth and final goal was struck by Saul Salmeron and was the result of a stolen ball from a Hobble Creek defender.

The final result - FCA won the game and the Championship 5-0.

Special mention to Josh Borland who played in-goal despite a tender knee as a result of a collision in the prior Hobble Creek game, which ended in a tie. Josh’s toughness allowed FCA to field 11 players.

MVP – Josh Borland and Ed Anderson.

FCA v. TC United – 1-1 Final
Friday, July 25, 2008

Playing in our second game of the day and our opponents first, we allowed a goal in the first half. A back-and-forth game until an FCA player received a red card with 13 minutes to play. Down a man, the young men of FCA really stepped up their game, dominating play and barely missing a number of shots. FCA’s never-give-up style paid off with a late score by Noah Bush off an assist by Saul Salmeron to tie the game and propel FCA into the championship game with the most points in their bracket. MVPs were Jesus Pelayo and Noah Bush.

FCA v. Xtreme XC – 5-0 Final
11:00 am Friday, July 25, 2008

FCA's third game of the tournament was against the Utah Xtreme XC club at 9:30 am. Utah Xtreme had beaten their first opponent 6-1 in a match the day before and this seemed like it could be another competitive game eventhough they were playing a man down. FCA started the scoring in the 3rd minute with a strike by Ruben Perez on an assist from Miguel Romo. The second goal occured in the 18th minute by Jose Luis Gomez off an assist by Mike Meyer. The rest of the half FCA controlled the ball but the half ended with FCA up 2-0.

The second half started with a quick goal 20 seconds into the half by Gomez, his second of the game, on an assist by Bush. The next goal was scored by Romo off of an assist by Alejandro Garcia. The final goal of the game was scored by Perez, his second goal of the match, off another assist from Bush. The Captains for this game were Gomez and Bush.

An additional highlight was a current university soccer coach was present for the match. He was impressed with the young mens' talents and patience. He and I spoke throughout the game and his more notable comment was, "I would like to get some of these guys to come play for me".

FCA possessed the ball for 95 percent of the game and allowed only one shot on goal.

We opened the scoring at 4:56 with a strike by Jose Luis Gomez off an assist Mike Meyer. The second goal was scored at 15:30, again by Gomez off an assist by Saul Salmeron (keeper). An untold number of missed shots and our opponent clearing 2 out of their goal kept the first-half score at 2-0. In the second half our opponent improved their play and scored 2 to end up tying us in regulation.

FCA v. Whatcom FC Rangers Gold – 1-2 Final
Monday, July 7, 2008

With the championship game on the line, FCA was in for another tough match against the reigning US Club Soccer Region G Champions on Monday. An unfortunate own-goal put FCA down 1-0 in the first five minutes of the game, but FCA rallied and came back with a solid shot from the 18 to tie the game up in the 15th minute. Then, with a minute left in the first half, the Rangers scored their only and final goal of the game, winning by a score of 1-2. The Rangers eventually went on to beat Cal North’s Bayside Arsenal to win the Championship for the second year in a row.

A tough tournament but the young men of FCA showed their grit as they started to believe they belong at this level of competition. Great job men!

FCA v. Washington Pacific Premier – 1-0 Final
Saturday, July 5, 2008

FC Athletico played Pacific Premier FC Red for their first game of the US Club Soccer Region G Championship. Truthfully, we were out played, particularly in the center mid-field. I’ve coached enough games to know I’ve lost some I should have won but with this game, we won and should have lost. Pacific Premier offered stellar competition but the team from Idaho Falls prevailed in a 1-0 win against the 31st-ranked team in Washington. Captains were Alejandro and Jose Luis.
