Championship Game
FCA v. Hobble Creek Storm – 5-0 Final
Saturday, July 26, 2008
|
With temperatures over century mark and only playing with 11 young men, the young men knew they had their work cut out for them as they made the field. The scoring started midway through the first half with a strike by Saul Salmeron off an assist Mike Meyer. Shortly thereafter, the second goal was scored by Alejandro Garcia from an assist by Noah Bush. First half ended with FCA up 2-0.
Remembering the Hobble Creek comeback to tie in the first match, the young men of FCA continued to press on in the second half. A strike by Alejandro Garcia off an assist by Ed Anderson kept the momentum in FCA’s favor. Only a few minutes later the fourth goal of the match was scored by Noah Bush off an assist by Miguel Romo. The fifth and final goal was struck by Saul Salmeron and was the result of a stolen ball from a Hobble Creek defender.
The final result - FCA won the game and the Championship 5-0.
Special mention to Josh Borland who played in-goal despite a tender knee as a result of a collision in the prior Hobble Creek game, which ended in a tie. Josh’s toughness allowed FCA to field 11 players.
MVP – Josh Borland and Ed Anderson.

Friday, July 25, 2008
|
Playing in our second game of the day and our opponents first, we allowed a goal in the first half. A back-and-forth game until an FCA player received a red card with 13 minutes to play. Down a man, the young men of FCA really stepped up their game, dominating play and barely missing a number of shots. FCA’s never-give-up style paid off with a late score by Noah Bush off an assist by Saul Salmeron to tie the game and propel FCA into the championship game with the most points in their bracket. FCA v. Xtreme XC – 5-0 Final
11:00 am Friday, July 25, 2008
|
FCA's third game of the tournament was against the Utah Xtreme XC club at 9:30 am. Utah Xtreme had beaten their first opponent 6-1 in a match the day before and this seemed like it could be another competitive game eventhough they were playing a man down. FCA started the scoring in the 3rd minute with a strike by Ruben Perez on an assist from Miguel Romo. The second goal occured in the 18th minute by Jose Luis Gomez off an assist by Mike Meyer. The rest of the half FCA controlled the ball but the half ended with FCA up 2-0.
The second half started with a quick goal 20 seconds into the half by Gomez, his second of the game, on an assist by Bush. The next goal was scored by Romo off of an assist by Alejandro Garcia. The final goal of the game was scored by Perez, his second goal of the match, off another assist from Bush. The Captains for this game were Gomez and Bush.
An additional highlight was a current university soccer coach was present for the match. He was impressed with the young mens' talents and patience. He and I spoke throughout the game and his more notable comment was, "I would like to get some of these guys to come play for me".
FCA possessed the ball for 95 percent of the game and allowed only one shot on goal.

With the championship game on the line, FCA was in for another tough match against the reigning US Club Soccer Region G Champions on Monday. An unfortunate own-goal put FCA down 1-0 in the first five minutes of the game, but FCA rallied and came back with a solid shot from the 18 to tie the game up in the 15th minute. Then, with a minute left in the first half, the Rangers scored their only and final goal of the game, winning by a score of 1-2. FCA v. Washington Pacific Premier – 1-0 Final
Saturday, July 5, 2008

FC Athletico played Pacific Premier FC Red for their first game of the US Club Soccer Region G Championship. Truthfully, we were out played, particularly in the center mid-field. I’ve coached enough games to know I’ve lost some I should have won but with this game, we won and should have lost. Pacific Premier offered stellar competition but the team from Idaho Falls prevailed in a 1-0 win against the 31st-ranked team in Washington. Captains were Alejandro and Jose Luis.
